The Individual
In this world, everyone is very certain of what they think is right. In fact, they are very eager to impose it on you too. This starts at home straightaway, where our parents are happy to tell us and have us do, what they think is right, and have us live what they think, is the right idea of life.
So where is the place in this world for such a man, who is very gullible and trusting, slow to think and unsure of his feelings, loves others more than himself and is lacking in courage, but at the mercy of this world? Such a man is bound to live a life that is not his own, despite no ill intentions!
There is no point blaming anyone for the qualities of man, especially when it took him 31 years to figure this truth out. It occurred because he could no longer bear the dissatisfaction with life, his mind was brooding on. It came out of unrest, out of relentless noise. No matter how much he would not like to be unhappy or discontented, it wouldn't go away, for the simple reason that his life is not what he would have liked it to be.
And that is where is the individual is! Who is a person, what distinguishes a person, but his choices, his likes and dislikes? Because, if one's tastes and desires are not what distinguishes, then the face and color of skin are the only remaining distinctions, which don't even count at all. And we must distinguish between base pleasures and deeper desires. In fact, if anything, the pursuit of food and sex is the least distinguishing of all desires.
But the desire to learn something, and not learn something else, to do something for a job, and not something else, to marry someone, and not marry someone else, are essential choices in life, to be determined solely by oneself and not be anyone else. These choices make us an individual. In fact, what we choose to wear, what we choose to eat and what we choose to say, are all expressions of our individualism.
Indian society, for all it's drama and self-aggrandizement, fails to see what it is, a system of individual oppression. Of the complete annihilation of the individual. They have even decided the right course of a man's whole life, even before he or she is born! What a travesty! What a loss!
